Water shilelds is  a modular waste water treatment system  that enables closed loop  nutrients and water recycling and  at the same time piece of beautiful landscape art.  Due to heavy  insulation  it is able to perform its functions in every climate including very  cold conditions maintaining above zero temperature  to support   water treatment biological processes. 

Water shields system  is usually installed as an aerobic secondary treatment step after septic tanks to work as a single pass or recirculation media filter. With some design modifications   biopot  modules can also be used as a primary filter without pre settling. The performance is further enhanced by source separation into black and gray water flows each of them treated by separate set of biopot modules totally as aerobic stage.

The active  filtering  substrate  – biochar (charcoal) is used in biopot and  The extracted  biochar  charged with nutrients  and beneficial organisms  then applied  as soil amendment  and fertilizer. In this way nutrients recycling is achieved- they are returned back to agriculture and the waste water becomes  a resource rather than a problem to solve. 

The performance of biofilter is  enhanced by earth worms which feed on charcoal substrate biofilm and help maintaining   aerobic conditions.  

Water shields  are followed by next  treatment steps, usually constructed wetlands or ground infiltration systems .  Due to biopot treatment  their size can be significantly reduced. Water shields system  can be added to the existing septic system and upgrade the effluent quality as well prolonging the lifespan of the leach field. Water shields modules  can be used in sequence potentially treating  waste water to a very high degree.
